Illumination Author Feature: Jarm Del Boccio

Illumination author Jarm Del Boccio with her award-winning book

For Jarm Del Boccio, writing isn’t just about crafting words on a page—it’s about bringing light and hope to readers in a way that sticks with them. Her award-winning book, The Heart Changer, does just that. Winning the 2020 Illumination Award for Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction was a moment of affirmation and joy, reminding Del Boccio that her work has meaning far beyond the page.

We sat down to chat more about her writing process, the advice she has for aspiring authors, and what she’s working on next.

What Winning an Illumination Award Meant to Del Boccio

When Del Boccio learned that her book had won an Illumination Award, she was thrilled. “Personally, it confirms that I am using the gift God has given me, and it’s a quality work that will make a difference in young people’s lives,” she shares.

On a professional level, the award has been equally impactful. “It gives credence to the fact that I am a good writer, but that other professionals have deemed me so. It also elevates my book in the eyes of editors, agents, or even readers,” Del Boccio says. For her, this recognition is about more than the award itself—it’s a signal to keep sharing stories that inspire and uplift.

Stories That Light the Way

What inspired Del Boccio to write The Heart Changer? It all comes down to her desire to empower young readers. “My desire in writing The Heart Changer is to bring hope in a sometimes confusing and dark world,” she explains.

She believes that even in moments of uncertainty, there’s a bigger story being written. “God is writing their story behind the scenes and working everything together for good,” she says. Every story Del Boccio writes carries this message, reminding readers that their lives have meaning and that God has a plan for them.

Breathing Life Into Hidden Heroes

Del Boccio’s writing process is deeply rooted in faith and history. She loves uncovering untold stories from the Bible, particularly those of young people who played important roles in God’s plan. “The Bible has many true stories of young people who have played a major part in God’s story, but we know very little about them,” she explains.

She takes these historical figures and imagines their lives, making them relatable for today’s readers. “My characters had the same struggles and desires as today’s young readers. They are heroes from ages past whom my readers can admire and emulate,” Del Boccio says. By connecting the past with the present, her stories feel timeless and deeply personal.

Overcoming the Challenges of Faith-Based Writing

Writing and publishing a faith-based book isn’t always easy. “Faith-based books are not readily sought out these days, especially if you are a new author,” Del Boccio admits. But persistence paid off. After years of pitching, she found her publisher through a Twitter pitch event.

Her journey is a reminder to never give up on your calling. “I continued to connect with and pursue editors and agents for a couple of years,” she shares.

Messages of Hope for Every Reader

The Heart Changer holds a powerful lesson for readers. “Although kids think life is ‘not fair,’ God has a purpose for our hard times, and He can use even a child for His special mission to change hearts,” Del Boccio says.

It’s a message she hopes will resonate with readers of all ages, reminding them that even in difficult times, there is a greater purpose at work.

Advice for Aspiring Authors

For writers dreaming of telling their stories, Del Boccio has some heartfelt advice. “Writing can be a challenging and frustrating career, but also very rewarding,” she says.

She emphasizes patience and perseverance. “It takes years to write, develop, and publish a work. You must be willing to be patient and persevere, even if there is no light at the end of the tunnel,” she advises. She also encourages writers to join critique groups, attend conferences, and set aside dedicated writing time.

What’s Next for Jarm Del Boccio

Del Boccio is already working on her next project, a nonfiction book for women navigating the changes of aging. The tentative title? Flourishing & Fragrant: Living Your Silver Years with Contentment and Joy.

“It’s not easy as we age to accept all the changes we are experiencing,” she explains. “I hope this book will be an encouragement to ‘blossom where God has planted us.’”
